Context of John 8:9
7But when they continued asking him, he lifted himself up and said to them, Let him that is without sin among you first cast the stone at her. 8And again stooping down he wrote on the ground. But they, having heard [that], went out one by one beginning from the elder ones until the last; and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing there. 10And Jesus, lifting himself up and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? Has no one condemned thee? 11And she said, No one, sir. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Being convicted by their own conscience - So it is likely they were all guilty of similar crimes. Their own is not in the original, and is needless: being convicted by conscience is expressive enough. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9Beginning at the eldest - As being conscious of more sins, and, therefore, being desirous to leave the Lord Jesus. The word “eldest” here probably refers not to age, but to benefit - from those who were in highest reputation to the lowest in rank. This consciousness of crime showed that the state of the public morals was exceedingly corrupt, and justified the declaration of Jesus that it was an adulterous and wicked generation, Matthew 16:4.
