Context of 1 Kings 22:38
36And there went the cry throughout the host at the going down of the sun, saying, Every man to his city, and every man to his own country! 37And the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria. And one washed the chariot in the pool of Samaria; and the dogs licked his blood, where the harlots bathed: according to the word of Jehovah, which he had spoken. 39And the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all that he did, and the ivory house that he built, and all the cities that he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 40And Ahab slept with his fathers; and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 22:38
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 38The dogs licked up his blood - Some of the rabbins think that this was in the very place where Naboth was stoned; see on 1 Kings 21:19; (note). The Septuagint translates this verse strangely: "And the swine and the dogs licked his blood, and the whores bathed themselves in his blood, according to the word of the Lord." It is certain that the Hebrew words, רחצו הזנות hazzonoth rachatsu, "washed his armor," might be translated as the Septuagint have done…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 38They washed his armour - Rather, “the harlots bathed in it.” The “pool of Samaria,” which was stained with Ahab‘s blood by the washing of his chariot in it, was, according to Josephus, the usual bathing-place of the Samaritan harlots. A large tank or reservoir, probably identical with this pool, still remains on the slope of the hill of Samaria, immediately outside the walls.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-40Verses 29-40 Ahab basely intended to betray Johoshaphat to danger, that he might secure himself. See what they get that join with wicked men. How can it be expected that he should be true to his friend, who has been false to his God! He had said in compliment to Ahab, I am as thou art, and now he was indeed taken for him. Those that associate with evil-doers, are in danger of sharing in their plagues. By Jehoshaphat's deliverance, God let him know, that…Read the comment
