Context of 1 Kings 22:38
36As the sun was setting, a cry went through the camp, “Each one should return to his city and to his homeland.” 37So the king died and was taken to Samaria, where they buried him. They washed off the chariot at the pool of Samaria (this was where the prostitutes bathed); dogs licked his blood, just as the Lord had said would happen. 39The rest of the events of Ahab’s reign, including a record of his accomplishments and how he built a luxurious palace and various cities, are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of the Kings of Israel. 40Ahab passed away. His son Ahaziah replaced him as king.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 22:38
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 38The dogs licked up his blood - Some of the rabbins think that this was in the very place where Naboth was stoned; see on 1 Kings 21:19; (note). The Septuagint translates this verse strangely: "And the swine and the dogs licked his blood, and the whores bathed themselves in his blood, according to the word of the Lord." It is certain that the Hebrew words, רחצו הזנות hazzonoth rachatsu, "washed his armor," might be translated as the Septuagint have done…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 38They washed his armour - Rather, “the harlots bathed in it.” The “pool of Samaria,” which was stained with Ahab‘s blood by the washing of his chariot in it, was, according to Josephus, the usual bathing-place of the Samaritan harlots. A large tank or reservoir, probably identical with this pool, still remains on the slope of the hill of Samaria, immediately outside the walls.Read the comment
