Context of 1 Kings 22:38
36Then the cry rang out in the army as the sun set, declaring: Each man to his own city, and each man to his own land! 37So the king died and was brought to Samaria. They buried the king in Samaria. Then someone washed the chariot at the pool of Samaria. The dogs licked up his blood, and the prostitutes bathed in it, according to the word of the Lord that he had spoken. 39The rest of the events of Ahab’s reign, along with all his accomplishments, including the ivory palace he built, and all the cities he built, are written in the Historical Record of Israel’s Kings. 40Ahab rested with his ancestors, and his son Ahaziah became king in his place.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 38The dogs licked up his blood - Some of the rabbins think that this was in the very place where Naboth was stoned; see on 1 Kings 21:19; (note). The Septuagint translates this verse strangely: "And the swine and the dogs licked his blood, and the whores bathed themselves in his blood, according to the word of the Lord." It is certain that the Hebrew words, רחצו הזנות hazzonoth rachatsu, "washed his armor," might be translated as the Septuagint have done…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 38They washed his armour - Rather, “the harlots bathed in it.” The “pool of Samaria,” which was stained with Ahab‘s blood by the washing of his chariot in it, was, according to Josephus, the usual bathing-place of the Samaritan harlots. A large tank or reservoir, probably identical with this pool, still remains on the slope of the hill of Samaria, immediately outside the walls.Read the comment

How can it be expected that he should be true to his friend, who has been false to his God! He had said in compliment to Ahab, I am as thou art, and now he was indeed taken for him. Those that associate with evil-doers, are in danger of sharing in their plagues. By Jehoshaphat's deliverance, God let him know, that…Read the comment
