Context of 1 Kings 22:38
36As the sun was setting, the cry rang out in the army: “Every man to his own city, and every man to his own land!” 37So the king died and was brought to Samaria, where they buried him. And the chariot was washed at the pool of Samaria where the prostitutes bathed, and the dogs licked up Ahab’s blood, according to the word that the LORD had spoken. 39As for the rest of the acts of Ahab, along with all his accomplishments and the ivory palace and all the cities he built, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 40And Ahab rested with his fathers, and his son Ahaziah reigned in his place.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 38The dogs licked up his blood - Some of the rabbins think that this was in the very place where Naboth was stoned; see on 1 Kings 21:19; (note). The Septuagint translates this verse strangely: "And the swine and the dogs licked his blood, and the whores bathed themselves in his blood, according to the word of the Lord." It is certain that the Hebrew words, רחצו הזנות hazzonoth rachatsu, "washed his armor," might be translated as the Septuagint have done…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 38They washed his armour - Rather, “the harlots bathed in it.” The “pool of Samaria,” which was stained with Ahab‘s blood by the washing of his chariot in it, was, according to Josephus, the usual bathing-place of the Samaritan harlots. A large tank or reservoir, probably identical with this pool, still remains on the slope of the hill of Samaria, immediately outside the walls.Read the comment
