Context of 1 Kings 22:38
36Just as the sun was setting, the cry ran through his troops: “We’re done for! Run for your lives!” 37So the king died, and his body was taken to Samaria and buried there. Then his chariot was washed beside the pool of Samaria, and dogs came and licked his blood at the place where the prostitutes bathed, just as the Lord had promised. 39The rest of the events in Ahab’s reign and everything he did, including the story of the ivory palace and the towns he built, are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Israel. 40So Ahab died, and his son Ahaziah became the next king.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 22:38
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 38The dogs licked up his blood - Some of the rabbins think that this was in the very place where Naboth was stoned; see on 1 Kings 21:19; (note). The Septuagint translates this verse strangely: "And the swine and the dogs licked his blood, and the whores bathed themselves in his blood, according to the word of the Lord." It is certain that the Hebrew words, רחצו הזנות hazzonoth rachatsu, "washed his armor," might be translated as the Septuagint have done…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 38They washed his armour - Rather, “the harlots bathed in it.” The “pool of Samaria,” which was stained with Ahab‘s blood by the washing of his chariot in it, was, according to Josephus, the usual bathing-place of the Samaritan harlots. A large tank or reservoir, probably identical with this pool, still remains on the slope of the hill of Samaria, immediately outside the walls.Read the comment
