Context of Matthew 26:71

69Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl approached him and said, “You were with Jesus the Galilean too.” 70But he denied it in front of everyone: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!” 72And again he denied it with an oath: “I don’t know the man!” 73After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, “You really are one of them, since even your accent gives you away.”

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 71Unto them that were there - Instead of · , more than one hundred MSS., many of which are of the first authority and antiquity, have · , she saith unto them, this man was There also. I rather think this is the genuine reading. might have been easily mistaken for , if the first syllable were but a little faded in a MS. from which others were copied: and then the placing of the point after · instead of after · would naturally follow, as placed after , it…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 71When he was gone out into the porch - The “entrance,” or the small apartment between the outer door and the large hall in the center of the building. See plan of a house, Notes, Matthew 9:1-8. Peter was embarrassed and confused by the question, and to save his confusion from attracting notice, he went away from the fire into the porch, where he expected to be unobserved - yet in vain. By the very movement to avoid detection, he came into contact with…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 69-75Verses 69-75 Peter's sin is truly related, for the Scriptures deal faithfully. Bad company leads to sin: those who needlessly thrust themselves into it, may expect to be tempted and insnared, as Peter. They scarcely can come out of such company without guilt or grief, or both. It is a great fault to be shy of Christ; and to dissemble our knowledge of him, when we are called to own him, is, in effect, to deny him. Peter's sin was aggravated; but he fell…Read the comment
