Context of John 19:16
14It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about noon. Then he told the Jews, “Here is your king!” 15They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king?” “We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered. Then he handed him over to be crucified. Then they took Jesus away. 17Carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16Then delivered he him - This was not till after he had washed his hands, Matthew 27:24, to show, by that symbolical action, that he was innocent of the death of Christ. John omits this circumstance, together with the insults which Christ received from the soldiers. See Matthew 27:26, etc.; Mark 15:16, etc.Read the comment

If thou let this man go, thou art not Cæsar's friend, &c.--"This was equivalent to a threat of impeachment, which we know was much dreaded by…Read the comment
