12Then he said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.” 13Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket by its horns. But in the mean while God would not in any case have human sacrifices used, another sacrifice is provided. Reference must be had to the promised Messiah, the blessed Seed. Christ was sacrificed in our stead, as this ram instead of Isaac, and his death…Read the comment

The use of the divine name Yahweh (the personal name of God) shows that the patriarchs knew this name (compare Exodus 6:2–3), even if they did not yet understand its full meaning (see study note on Exodus 6:2–3). to this day: Later Israelites saw this story as a lesson about their worship in…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1913-19. Abraham lifted up his eyes ... and behold ... a ram, &c.--No method was more admirably calculated to give the patriarch a distinct idea of the purpose of grace than this scenic representation: and hence our Lord's allusion to it (Joh 8:56).Read the comment
