Context of 1 Corinthians 15:6

4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8Last of all, as to one born at the wrong time, he also appeared to me.

Commentaries on 1 Corinthians 15:6

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Above five hundred brethren at once - This was probably in Galilee, where our Lord had many disciples. See Matthew 28:16. What a remarkable testimony is this to the truth of our Lord's resurrection! Five hundred persons saw him at one time; the greater part of whom were alive when the apostle wrote, and he might have been confronted by many if he had dared to assert a falsity.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Above five hundred brethren at once - More than 500 Christians or followers of Jesus at one time. This was probably in Galilee, where the Lord Jesus had spent the greater part of his public ministry, and where he had made most disciples. The place, however, is not designated, and, of course, cannot be known. It is remarkable that this fact is omitted by all the evangelists; but why they should have omitted so remarkable a proof of the resurrection of the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6More than 500 people saw him. We have no other record of this event. Most of these witnesses were still alive when this letter was written (around AD 53–56). People could verify Christ’s resurrection by asking these living eyewitnesses.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 66. five hundred--This appearance was probably on the mountain (Tabor, according to tradition), in Galilee, when His most solemn and public appearance, according to His special promise, was vouchsafed (Mt 26:32; 28:7, 10, 16). He "appointed" this place, as one remote from Jerusalem, so that believers might assemble there more freely and securely. Alford's theory of Jerusalem being the scene, is improbable; as such a multitude of believers could not, with…Read the comment
