5and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. 6Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8Last of all, as to one born at the wrong time, he also appeared to me. 9For I am the least of the apostles, not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7After that, he was seen of James - But where, and on what occasion, we are not told; nor indeed do we know which James is intended; James the son of Zebedee, or James the son of Alpheus. But one thing is sufficiently evident, from what is here said, that this James, of whom the apostle speaks, was still alive; for the apostle's manner of speaking justifies this conclusion. Then of all the apostles - Including, not only the eleven, but, as some suppose…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7After that, he was seen of James - This appearance is not recorded by the evangelists. It is mentioned in the fragment of the apocryphal Gospel according to the Hebrews, which is, however, of no authority. It is probable that the Lord Jesus appeared often to the disciples, since he was 40 days on earth after his resurrection, and the evangelists have only mentioned the more prominent instances, and enough to substantiate the fact of his resurrection. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7Then He appeared to James: This James was almost certainly the brother of Jesus. He became a leader of the Jerusalem church after Jesus died (see Mark 6:3; John 7:1–5; Galatians 1:19; compare Acts 12:17; 15:13; 21:18).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. seen of James--the Less, the brother of our Lord (Ga 1:19). The Gospel according to the Hebrews, quoted by Jerome [On Illustrious Men, p. 170 D.], records that "James swore he would not eat bread from the hour that he drank the cup of the Lord, till he should see Him rising again from the dead." all the apostles--The term here includes many others besides "the Twelve" already enumerated (1Co 15:5): perhaps the seventy disciples (Lu 10:1) [Chrysostom].Read the comment
