Context of Revelation 12:6
4His tail swept a third of the stars from the sky, hurling them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, ready to devour her child as soon as she gave birth. 5And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter. And her child was caught up to God and to His throne. And the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her to be nourished for 1,260 days. 7Then a war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8But the dragon was not strong enough, and no longer was any place found in heaven for him and his angels.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6And the woman fled into the wilderness - The account of the woman's flying into the wilderness immediately follows that of her child being caught up to the throne of God, to denote the great and rapid increase of heresies in the Christian Church after the time that Christianity was made the religion of the empire. Fled - That is, she fled in the manner, and at the time, stated in Revelation 12:14. John here evidently anticipates, by a summary statement, what he relates more in detail in Revelation 12:14-17. He had referred Revelation 12:2-5 to what occurred to the child in its persecutions, and he here alludes, in general, to what befell the true church as compelled to flee into…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6Like the people of Israel who were spiritually refined in the wilderness (see Hosea 2:14–15; Acts 7:38–45) and in exile in Babylon (see Isaiah 5:13; Ezekiel 12:1–3), the Christian church must face its own challenges. Revelation shares messages of endurance and perseverance during difficult times and shows that God provides places of refuge and ways to escape for his people (compare 1 Corinthians 10:13). 1,260 days: See study note on Revelation 11:2–3.Read the comment
