Context of Psalms 45:3
1My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses to the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer. 2You are the most handsome of men; grace has anointed your lips; therefore God has blessed you forever. Strap your sword at your side, O mighty warrior; appear in your majesty and splendor. 4In your splendor ride forth in victory on behalf of truth and humility and justice; may your right hand show your awesome deeds. 5Your arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s foes; the nations fall beneath your feet.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty - This clause should be translated, O hero, gird thy sword upon thy thigh! This, I think, cannot be spoken of Solomon. He was not a warlike prince: he never did any feats of arms. It has been said he would have been a warrior, if he had had enemies; it might have been so: but the words more properly apply to Christ, who is King of kings, and Lord of lords; whose sword with two edges, proceeding from his mouth…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3Gird thy sword upon thy thigh - That is, Arm or prepare thyself for battle and conquest. The Messiah is introduced here as a conquering king; as about to go forward to subdue the nations to himself; as about to set up a permanent kingdom. O most mighty - That is, Hero; Warrior; Conqueror. With thy glory and thy majesty - With the glory and majesty appropriate to thee; or which properly belong to thee. This is at the same time the expression of a wish on…Read the comment
