Context of Matthew 25:15

13Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour. 14For it is just like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted them with his possessions. To one he gave five talents, to another two talents, and to another one talent—each according to his own ability. And he went on his journey. 16The servant who had received the five talents went at once and put them to work and gained five more. 17Likewise, the one with the two talents gained two more.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15Unto one he gave five talents - to every man according to his several ability - The duties men are called to perform are suited to their situations, and the talents they receive. The good that any man has he has received from God, as also the ability to improve that good. God's graces and temporal mercies are suited to the power which a man has of improving them. To give eminent gifts to persons incapable of properly improving them, would be only to lead…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15Five talents - See the notes at Matthew 18:24. The word “talents” here is used to denote indefinitely “a large sum,” and is designed to refer to the endowments conferred on people. We have retained in our language the word “talent” as referring to the abilities or gifts of men. According to his several ability - According to the ability of each one. According as he saw each one was adapted to improve it. So in the church and the world. God gives people…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-30Verses 14-30 Christ keeps no servants to be idle: they have received their all from him, and have nothing they can call their own but sin. Our receiving from Christ is in order to our working for him. The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. The day of account comes at last. We must all be reckoned with as to what good we have got to our own souls, and have done to others, by the advantages we have enjoyed. It is not meant…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-30This parable teaches that the Lord expects his servants to be faithful to the task given to them while waiting for his return. The delay of Christ’s return will cause some to do evil things (Matthew 24:48–49), some to become inactive (25:3), and others may become fearfully passive (25:18).Read the comment
