Context of 1 Corinthians 2:7
5so that your faith would not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power. 6Among the mature, however, we speak a message of wisdom—but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we speak of the mysterious and hidden wisdom of God, which He destined for our glory before time began. 8None of the rulers of this age understood it. For if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9Rather, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart has imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Commentaries on 1 Corinthians 2:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7The wisdom of God in a mystery - The Gospel of Jesus Christ, which had been comparatively hidden from the foundation of the world, (the settling of the Jewish economy, as this phrase often means), though appointed from the beginning to be revealed in the fullness of time. For, though this Gospel was, in a certain sense, announced by the prophets, and prefigured by the law, yet it is certain that even the most intelligent of the Jewish rulers, their…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-9Verses 6-9 Those who receive the doctrine of Christ as Divine, and, having been enlightened by the Holy Spirit, have looked well into it, see not only the plain history of Christ, and him crucified, but the deep and admirable designs of Divine wisdom therein. It is the mystery made manifest to the saints, Col 1:26, though formerly hid from the heathen world; it was only shown in dark types and distant prophecies, but now is revealed and made known by the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7mysterious and hidden wisdom: In Paul’s writings, "mystery" often means a truth that was once hidden but is now revealed in the good news about Jesus and his saving work (see Romans 11:25–27; 1 Timothy 3:9, 16). Before time began: From the start, God wanted to save his chosen people through Jesus (see Romans 16:25–26; Ephesians 1:9–12; 3:3–12; Colossians 1:25–27) and lead them to ultimate glory in the future age (see Romans 5:2; 8:18–21, 29–30; 1…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-76-7. Yet the Gospel preaching, so far from being at variance with true "wisdom," is a wisdom infinitely higher than that of the wise of the world. we speak--resuming "we" (preachers, I, Apollos, &c.) from "we preach" (1Co 1:28), only that here, "we speak" refers to something less public (compare 1Co 2:7, 13, "mystery ... hidden") than "we preach," which is public. For "wisdom" here denotes not the whole of Christian doctrine, but its sublimer and deeper…Read the comment
