Context of Matthew 14:13
11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother [Herodias]. 12And John’s disciples came and took away the body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus. When Jesus heard about John, He left there privately in a boat and went to a secluded place. But when the crowds heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt [profound] compassion for them and healed their sick. 15When evening came, the disciples came to Him and said, “This is an isolated place and the hour is already late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence - Had the blessed Jesus continued in that place, it is probable the hand of this impure female murderer would have been stretched out against him also: he withdrew, therefore, not through fear, but to teach his messengers rather to yield to the storm than expose themselves to destruction, where, from circumstances, the case is evidently hopeless. The people - followed him on foot - , or, by land, which is a…Read the comment

Matthew 14:13 And when Jesus heard of it, he departed - He went to a place of safety. He never threw himself unnecessarily into danger. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-21Verses 13-21 When Christ and his word withdraw, it is best for us to follow, seeking the means of grace for our souls before any worldly advantages. The presence of Christ and his gospel, makes a desert not only tolerable, but desirable. This little supply of bread was increased by Christ's creating power, till the whole multitude were satisfied. In seeking the welfare of men's souls, we should have compassion on their bodies likewise. Let us also…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-21What Jesus did consistently fulfilled Old Testament promises about the kingdom of heaven and the Messiah (Matthew 11:5–6; 12:28). Here, Jesus reminded people of God's gift of manna to the Israelites (Exodus 16; see John 6:32). This showed that he is the promised prophet of the end times (see Deuteronomy 18:15–16).Read the comment
