Context of John 13:26
24So Simon Peter motioned to him (John) and [quietly] asked [him to ask Jesus] of whom He was speaking. 25Then leaning back against Jesus’ chest, he (John) asked Him [privately], “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I am going to give this piece [of bread] after I have dipped it.” So when He had dipped the piece of bread [into the dish], He gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. 27After [Judas had taken] the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly [without delay].” 28But no one reclining at the table knew why He said this to him.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26And when he had dipped the sop - Dr. Lightfoot observes that it was no unusual thing to dip a sop and give it to any person; and it is probable that the rest of the disciples considered it as given to Judas that he might hurry to do some work on which he wished to employ him, and not wait to finish his supper in a regular manner. They did not hear the question that John asked, nor our Lord's answer; but they no doubt heard the words, That thou doest do…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 26Jesus answered - That is, he answered John. It does not appear that either Judas or the other apostles heard him. Shall give a sop - The word translated “sop” means a morsel, a piece of bread, or anything else eaten - as much as we are accustomed to take at a mouthful. Jesus was about to dip it in the sauce which was used at the Passover. The word “dip,” in the original, is that from which is derived the word “baptize.” It means here that Jesus would dip…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-30Verses 18-30 Our Lord had often spoken of his own sufferings and death, without such trouble of spirit as he now discovered when he spake of Judas. The sins of Christians are the grief of Christ. We are not to confine our attention to Judas. The prophecy of his treachery may apply to all who partake of God's mercies, and meet them with ingratitude. See the infidel, who only looks at the Scriptures with a desire to do away their authority and destroy their…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 26Meals included flat bread, which those eating would dip into a shared bowl. Jesus gave a piece to Judas (compare Ruth 2:14). The disciples might have thought Jesus was honoring him. They did not understand what was happening. They even thought that when Judas left, it was to fulfill an official duty for the feast (John 13:29). However, Jesus was signaling to Judas that he knew Judas's plan and was not surprised. The knowledge Jesus has is deep and…Read the comment
