Context of John 10:28
26But you do not believe Me [so you do not trust and follow Me] because you are not My sheep. 27The sheep that are My own hear My voice and listen to Me; I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they will never, ever [by any means] perish; and no one will ever snatch them out of My hand. 29My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater and mightier than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30I and the Father are One [in essence and nature].”

Commentaries on John 10:28
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28They shall never perish - Why? Because they hear my voice, and follow me; therefore I know, I approve of and love them, and give them eternal life. They who continue to hear Christ's voice, and to follow him, shall never perish. They give themselves up to God - believe so on Jesus that he lives in their hearts: God hath given unto them eternal life, and this life is in his Son; and he that hath the Son hath life, 1 John 5:11, 1 John 5:12. Now it is…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 28I give unto them eternal life - See John 5:24. Shall never perish - To perish here means to be destroyed, or to be punished in hell. Matthew 10:28; “which is able to destroy (the same word) both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 18:14; “it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.” John 3:15; “that whosoever believeth in him should not perish” Romans 2:12; They who have sinned without law shall also…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-30Verses 22-30 All who have any thing to say to Christ, may find him in the temple. Christ would make us to believe; we make ourselves doubt. The Jews understood his meaning, but could not form his words into a full charge against him. He described the gracious disposition and happy state of his sheep; they heard and believed his word, followed him as his faithful disciples, and none of them should perish; for the Son and the Father were one. Thus he was…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27-29As the good shepherd, Jesus would die for his sheep and protect them from all predators and thieves (10:1, 8, 11; see Ezekiel 34:22–23). The Father's power, shown through Jesus, keeps his sheep safe. No one can steal from Jesus those who trust in him. This is because no one is stronger than Jesus. Their security depends on Christ, not their own efforts. The word translated as snatch suggests violence (as in John 6:15).Read the comment
