Context of Hebrews 5:8
6just as He also says in another place, “You are a priest [appointed] forever According to the order of Melchizedek.” 7In the days of His earthly life, Jesus offered up both [specific] petitions and [urgent] supplications [for that which He needed] with fervent crying and tears to the One who was [always] able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverent submission toward God [His sinlessness and His unfailing determination to do the Father’s will]. Although He was a Son [who had never been disobedient to the Father], He learned [active, special] obedience through what He suffered. 9And having been made perfect [uniquely equipped and prepared as Savior and retaining His integrity amid opposition], He became the source of eternal salvation [an eternal inheritance] to all those who obey Him, 10being designated by God as High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8Though he were a Son - Though the Son of God. Though he sustained this exalted rank, and was conscious of it, yet he was willing to learn experimentally what is meant by obedience in the midst of sufferings. Yet learned he obedience - That is, he learned experimentally and practically. It cannot be supposed that he did not “know” what obedience was; or that he was “indisposed” to obey God before he suffered; or that he had, as we have, perversities of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8He learned obedience through his suffering. Jesus was always obedient, even before his suffering. He lived his human life, including his death on the cross, fully submitting to God's will. We are expected to follow the same path (Hebrews 12:1–11).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. Though He WAS (so it ought to be translated: a positive admitted fact: not a mere supposition as were would imply) God's divine Son (whence, even in His agony, He so lovingly and often cried, Father, Mt 26:39), yet He learned His (so the Greek) obedience, not from His Sonship, but from His sufferings. As the Son, He was always obedient to the Father's will; but the special obedience needed to qualify Him as our High Priest, He learned experimentally in…Read the comment
