Context of Romans 5:4

2Through Him we also have gained access by faith into this grace in which we stand and boast in the hope of God’s glory. 3And not only that, but we also boast in suffering—knowing that suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Ruach ha-Kodesh who was given to us. 6For while we were still helpless, at the right time Messiah died for the ungodly.

Commentaries on Romans 5:4

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4And patience, experience - ̓, Full proof, by trial, of the truth of our religion, the solidity of our Christian state, and the faithfulness of our God. In such cases we have the opportunity of putting our religion to the test; and, by every such test, it receives the deeper sterling stamp. The apostle uses here also a metaphor taken from the purifying, refining, and testing of silver and gold. Experience, hope - For we thus calculate, that he who has…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4And patience, experience - Patient endurance of trial produces experience. The word rendered “experience” ( ́ dokimēn) means trial, testing, or that thorough examination by which we ascertain the quality or nature of a thing, as when we test a metal by fire, or in any other way, to ascertain that it is genuine. It also means approbations, or the result of such a trial; the being approved, and accepted as the effect of a trying process. The meaning is…Read the comment

• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-43-4. we glory in tribulation also; knowing that tribulation worketh patience--Patience is the quiet endurance of what we cannot but wish removed, whether it be the withholding of promised good (Ro 8:25), or the continued experience of positive ill (as here). There is indeed a patience of unrenewed nature, which has something noble in it, though in many cases the offspring of pride, if not of something lower. Men have been known to endure every form of…Read the comment
