Context of Romans 2:7
5But by your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment is revealed. 6He will pay back each person according to his deeds. To those who by perseverance in doing good are seeking glory, honor, and immortality—eternal life. 8But to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—wrath and fury. 9There will be trouble and hardship for every human soul that does evil—to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7To those … doing good … He will give eternal life: Paul explains elsewhere that no one can receive eternal life except as God's gift through faith (3:20, 28; 4:1–8). Here, Paul may be speaking about Christians whose good actions come from faith and will be considered in God’s judgment. Or he may be pointing to God’s perfect standard of holiness, which shows that only complete perfection could bring acceptance before God. As Paul’s argument continues, he…Read the comment
