Context of Philippians 1:14
12Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually resulted in the advancement of the Good News. 13And so my imprisonment in the cause of Messiah has become well known throughout the whole Praetorian Guard and to everyone else. Because of my imprisonment, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord to dare more than ever to speak the message fearlessly. 15Some are proclaiming the Messiah out of envy and strife, but others out of good will. 16The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the Good News.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-20Verses 12-20 The apostle was a prisoner at Rome; and to take off the offence of the cross, he shows the wisdom and goodness of God in his sufferings. These things made him known, where he would never have otherwise been known; and led some to inquire after the gospel. He suffered from false friends, as well as from enemies.
