Context of Mark 9:13
11And they questioned Him, saying, “Why do the Torah scholars say that Elijah must come first?” 12Now He told them, “Indeed Elijah comes first; he restores all things. And how is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be treated with contempt? I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written about him.” 14When they came to the disciples, they saw a big crowd around them and the Torah scholars arguing with them. 15Suddenly, when the whole crowd saw Yeshua, they were amazed and began running to greet Him.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13The teachers of the law made a mistake by not realizing that Elijah had already come (see Matthew 17:11–13; compare Malachi 4:5–6). Because of this, they did not recognize that the kingdom of God had already arrived. They also failed to realize that the Messiah's suffering and death, which were predicted in Scripture, were about to take place.Read the comment
