Context of Luke 22:48

46And He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation.” 47While Yeshua was speaking, suddenly a crowd came, and the one called Judah, one of the Twelve, approached Yeshua to kiss Him. But Yeshua said to him, “Judah, with a kiss you betray the Son of Man?” 49When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Master, shall we strike with the sword?” 50And one of them struck the servant of the kohen gadol and cut off his right ear.

Commentaries on Luke 22:48

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 48Betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? - Dost thou attempt to kiss me as a friend, while thou art delivering me up into the hands of my enemies? We need not wonder at all this, as Satan himself had entered into the heart of this traitor, see Luke 22:3; consequently we can expect nothing from him but what is fell, deceitful, and cruel.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 47-53Verses 47-53 See this explained in Matthew 26:48-56. Luke 22:48 Betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? - By the “Son of man” was evidently meant “the Messiah.” Judas had had the most satisfactory evidence of that, and did not doubt it. A kiss was the sign of affection. By that slight artifice Judas thought to conceal his base purpose. Jesus with severity reproaches him for it. Every word is emphatic. “Betrayest” thou - dost thou violate all thy…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 47-53Verses 47-53 Nothing can be a greater affront or grief to the Lord Jesus, than to be betrayed by those who profess to be his followers, and say that they love him. Many instances there are, of Christ's being betrayed by those who, under the form of godliness, fight against the power of it. Jesus here gave an illustrious example of his own rule of doing good to those that hate us, as afterwards he did of praying for those that despitefully use us. Corrupt…Read the comment
