Context of Luke 18:19

17Amen, I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 18And a religious leader inquired of Yeshua, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why are you calling Me good?” Yeshua said to him. “No one is good except One—that is God. 20You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’” 21The man said, “All these I have kept since my youth.”

• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1919. Why, &c.--Did our Lord mean then to teach that God only ought to be called "good?" Impossible, for that had been to contradict all Scripture teaching, and His own, too (Psa 112:5; Mt 25:21; Tit 1:8). Unless therefore we are to ascribe captiousness to our Lord, He could have had but one object--to raise the youth's ideas of Himself, as not to be classed merely with other "good masters," and declining to receive this title apart from the "One" who is…Read the comment
