Context of 2 Timothy 1:11
9He has saved us and called us with a holy calling— not because of our deeds but because of His own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Messiah Yeshua before time began, 10but now has been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Messiah Yeshua. Indeed, He nullified the power of death and brought life and immortality to light through the Good News. For this Good News I was appointed a herald and an emissary and a teacher. 12For this reason I also am suffering these things—but I am not ashamed, for I know in whom I have trusted and I am convinced He is able to safeguard what I have entrusted to Him until that Day. 13Keep the standard of sound words you have heard from me, in the faithfulness and love that are in Messiah Yeshua.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-14Verses 6-14 God has not given us the spirit of fear, but the spirit of power, of courage and resolution, to meet difficulties and dangers; the spirit of love to him, which will carry us through opposition. We are likely to bear afflictions well, when we have strength and power from God to enable us to bear them. As…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-14Paul is gentle but firm in calling Timothy to come to Rome (see also 4:9, 21; compare 1 Timothy 1:3–11, 12–17). Suffering seemed certain if Timothy remained loyal. Paul wanted to strengthen Timothy’s determination. The mentions of the Holy Spirit in 2 Timothy 1:6–7 and 1:14 create an inclusio (literary framework) around this section.Read the comment
