1 Samuel 24

Revised Webster's Bible

1And it came to pass, when SaulH7586 had returnedH7725 from followingH310 the PhilistinesH6430, that it was toldH5046 to him, sayingH559, Behold, DavidH1732 is in the wildernessH4057 of EngediH5872.1 2Then SaulH7586 tookH3947 threeH7969 thousandH505 chosenH977 menH376 out of all IsraelH3478, and wentH3212 to seekH1245 DavidH1732 and his menH582 uponH6440 the rocksH6697 of the wild goatsH3277. 3And he cameH935 to the sheepfoldsH1448H6629 by the wayH1870, where was a caveH4631; and SaulH7586 went inH935 to coverH5526 his feetH7272: and DavidH1732 and his menH582 remainedH3427 in the sidesH3411 of the caveH4631. 4And the menH582 of DavidH1732 saidH559 to him, Behold the dayH3117 of which the LORDH3068 saidH559 to thee, Behold, I will deliverH5414 thy enemyH341 into thy handH3027, that thou mayest doH6213 to him as it shall seem goodH3190 to theeH5869. Then DavidH1732 aroseH6965, and secretlyH3909 cut offH3772 the skirtH3671 of Saul’sH7586 robeH4598.2 5And it came to pass afterwardH310, that David’sH1732 heartH3820 smoteH5221 him, because he had cut offH3772 Saul’sH7586 skirtH3671. 6And he saidH559 to his menH582, The LORDH3068 forbidH2486 that I should doH6213 this thingH1697 to my masterH113, the LORD’SH3068 anointedH4899, to stretch forthH7971 my handH3027 against him, seeing he is the anointedH4899 of the LORDH3068. 7So DavidH1732 restrainedH8156 his servantsH582 with these wordsH1697, and permittedH5414 them not to riseH6965 against SaulH7586. But SaulH7586 roseH6965 out of the caveH4631, and wentH3212 on his wayH1870.3 8DavidH1732 also roseH6965 afterward, and went outH3318 of the caveH4631, and criedH7121 afterH310 SaulH7586, sayingH559, My lordH113 the kingH4428. And when SaulH7586 lookedH5027 behindH310 him, DavidH1732 stoopedH6915 with his faceH639 to the earthH776, and bowedH7812 himself.

9And DavidH1732 saidH559 to SaulH7586, Why hearestH8085 thou men’sH120 wordsH1697, sayingH559, Behold, DavidH1732 seekethH1245 thy harmH7451? 10Behold, this dayH3117 thy eyesH5869 have seenH7200 how the LORDH3068 hath deliveredH5414 thee to dayH3117 into my handH3027 in the caveH4631: and some badeH559 me killH2026 thee: but my eye sparedH2347 thee; and I saidH559, I will not put forthH7971 my handH3027 against my lordH113; for he is the LORD’SH3068 anointedH4899. 11Moreover, my fatherH1, seeH7200, yea, seeH7200 the skirtH3671 of thy robeH4598 in my handH3027: for in that I cut offH3772 the skirtH3671 of thy robeH4598, and killedH2026 thee not, knowH3045 thou and seeH7200 that there is neither evilH7451 nor transgressionH6588 in my handH3027, and I have not sinnedH2398 against thee; yet thou huntestH6658 my soulH5315 to takeH3947 it. 12The LORDH3068 judgeH8199 between me and thee, and the LORDH3068 avengeH5358 me of thee: but my handH3027 shall not be upon thee. 13As saithH559 the proverbH4912 of the ancientsH6931, WickednessH7562 proceedethH3318 from the wickedH7563: but my handH3027 shall not be upon thee. 14AfterH310 whom is the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 come outH3318? afterH310 whom dost thou pursueH7291? afterH310 a deadH4191 dogH3611, afterH310 aH259 fleaH6550. 15The LORDH3068 therefore be judgeH1781, and judgeH8199 between me and thee, and seeH7200, and pleadH7378 my causeH7379, and deliverH8199 me out of thy handH3027.4

16And it came to pass, when DavidH1732 had finishedH3615 speakingH1696 these wordsH1697 to SaulH7586, that SaulH7586 saidH559, Is this thy voiceH6963, my sonH1121 DavidH1732? And SaulH7586 lifted upH5375 his voiceH6963, and weptH1058. 17And he saidH559 to DavidH1732, Thou art more righteousH6662 than I: for thou hast rewardedH1580 me with goodH2896, though I have rewardedH1580 thee with evilH7451. 18And thou hast showedH5046 this dayH3117 how thou hast dealtH6213H2896 with me: forasmuch as when the LORDH3068 had deliveredH5462 me into thy handH3027, thou didst not killH2026 me.5 19For if a manH376 findethH4672 his enemyH341, will he let him goH7971 awayH1870 wellH2896? therefore the LORDH3068 rewardH7999 thee with goodH2896 for what thou hast doneH6213 to me this dayH3117. 20And now, behold, I know wellH3045 that thou shalt surelyH4427 be kingH4427, and that the kingdomH4467 of IsraelH3478 shall be establishedH6965 in thy handH3027. 21SwearH7650 now therefore to me by the LORDH3068, that thou wilt notH518 cut offH3772 my seedH2233 afterH310 me, and that thou wilt not destroyH8045 my nameH8034 out of my father’sH1 houseH1004. 22And DavidH1732 sworeH7650 to SaulH7586. And SaulH7586 wentH3212 homeH1004; but DavidH1732 and his menH582 went upH5927 to the strong holdH4686.
