Context of 1 Chronicles 16:4
2And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of Yhwh. 3And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of Yhwh, and to record, and to thank and praise Yhwh God of Israel: 5Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed–edom: and Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals; 6Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God.

Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 16:4
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4-42Verses 4-42 This passage is interposed by the writer of Chronicles between two sentences of the parallel passage in Samuel. It contains a detailed account of the service which David instituted at this time, a service out of which grew the more elaborate service of the temple. The language of much of the passage is remarkably archaic, and there can be no reasonable doubt that it is in the main an extract from a record of the time of David. 1 Chronicles…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-43The transfer of the ark (1 Chronicles 16:1–3) and the event's conclusion (16:43) are reported just like in Samuel (see 2 Samuel 6:17–20). However, between these parts, the Chronicler adds details about the celebrations and the permanent worship arrangements (1 Chronicles 16:4–42). David’s psalm of celebration is the main focus of the account.Read the comment
