The presidents of conferences have hurt and bruised the souls of God’s workers because they felt inclined to do it. What power was prompting to action? the power from beneath. After Christ has made the infinite sacrifice to redeem us from the oppressive power of Satan, shall we fail to pity and help those who are fallen and sinful like ourselves? Shall one man usurp an authority over his brethren and hurt their souls because he imagines that he has authority and can do this work? The Lord “suffered no man to do them wrong; yea, he reproved kings for their sakes saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.” [1 Chronicles 16:21, 22.]

Compassion for the Erring

GW92 94.2

Frequently there is necessity for plainly rebuking sin and reproving wrong. But ministers who are working for the salvation of their fellow-men, should not be pitiless toward the errors of one another, nor make prominent the defects in their organizations. They should not expose or reprove their weaknesses. They should inquire if such a course, pursued by another toward themselves, would bring about the desired effect; would it increase their love for, and confidence in, the one who thus made prominent their mistakes? Especially should the mistakes of ministers who are engaged in the work of God be kept within as small a circle as possible; for there are many weak ones who will take advantage if they are aware that those who minister in word and doctrine have weaknesses like other men. And it is a most cruel thing for the faults of a minister to be exposed to unbelievers, if that minister is counted worthy to labor in [the] future for the salvation of souls. No good can come of this exposure, but only harm. The Lord frowns upon this course, for it is undermining the confidence of the people in those whom he accepts to carry forward his work. The character of every laborer should be jealously guarded by brother ministers. God says, “Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.” [1 Chronicles 16:22.] Love and confidence should be cherished. A lack of this love and confidence in one minister for another does not increase the happiness of the one thus deficient, but as he makes his brother unhappy, he is unhappy himself. There is greater power in love than was ever found in censure. Love will melt its way through barriers, while censure will close up every avenue of the soul....

The Lord calls upon you to be converted. You need to see your spiritual necessities. Your feelings that you have cherished towards Elder Haskell are wrong. Write and speak bitter things against yourself, but “touch not Mine anointed, and do My prophets no harm” (1 Chronicles 16:22). God’s hand encircles His servant as a buckler, and the hand that would wound His servant strikes the hand that encircles him, and that hand bears the sword of justice. Far better be upon your knees before God, pleading for Him to sustain His servant to fight the battles of the Lord successfully, to give him courage and light and a clear conception of His will. In your murmuring and hatred against the man, you have not realized you were murmuring against the Master, whose servant he is.

The churches have an abundance of the religion and zeal that Paul had. Many persecute those who differ from them in religious matters. But no true Christian will persecute one who conscientiously differs from him in faith. Those who try to force the consciences of their fellowmen do it because Christ is not abiding in their hearts. They do not realize that they have the attributes of Satan, but he delights to make them his instruments to bear witness against God’s chosen ones. They strive to make them observe rites that have no foundation in the Word of God. When these persecutors have the Spirit of Christ, they will hear and receive the words of Christ “Touch not Mine anointed, and do My prophets no harm” (1 Chronicles 16:22). Christ and Him crucified will absorb the whole soul.

The character of every fellow laborer should be jealously guarded by brother ministers. Saith God: “Touch not Mine anointed, and do My prophets no harm.” 1 Chronicles 16:22; Psalm 105:15. Love and confidence should be cherished. A lack of this love and confidence in one minister for another does not increase the happiness of the one thus deficient, but as he makes his brother unhappy he is unhappy himself. There is greater power in love than was ever found in censure. Love will melt its way through barriers, while censure will close up every avenue of the soul.

I verily believe that here is a victory for you to gain. God has spoken to you in visions. He has spoken to you in dreams, but yet you continue to do these very things He has warned you not to do. I cannot believe that you are impelled by the Spirit of God. “Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.” 1 Chronicles 16:22.

We may rejoice in hope, and our faith grasp the rich promises by virtue of the atonement. Then when His Spirit moves our hearts to present to Him by vows that which is His own, shall we become unfaithful, careless and negligent in regard to our duty? “Of thine own,” says David, “we freely give thee.” [1 Chronicles 29:14.] The Lord through infinite sacrifice of His own precious life paid the purchase money for our redemption, and shall we after solemnly pledging to God of the gifts He has freely bestowed upon us, let selfishness come in and refuse to do the things we have promised? It is true you may suffer inconvenience in your homes for a time, but if your gifts and offerings are made cheerfully, heartily as unto the Lord, the Lord will not forget your labor of love in His name. The whole-souled workers need not be discouraged at reverses, for the Lord is not forgetful of your earnest, zealous efforts to show your respect for the Master in preparing a place for Him to abide with you while you worship Him “in the beauty of holiness.” [1 Chronicles 16:29.]

Praise the Lord in the congregation of His people. When the word of the Lord was spoken to the Hebrews anciently, the command was: “And let all the people say, Amen” (Psalm 106:48). When the ark of the covenant was brought into the city of David, and a psalm of joy and triumph was chanted, “all the people said, Amen, and praised the Lord” (1 Chronicles 16:36). This fervent response was an evidence that they understood the word spoken and joined in the worship of God.
