Context of Mark 13:5
3Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives across the valley from the Temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him privately and asked him, 4“Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled?” Jesus replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, 6for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will deceive many. 7And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-13Verses 5-13 Our Lord Jesus, in reply to the disciples' question, does not so much satisfy their curiosity as direct their consciences. When many are deceived, we should thereby be awakened to look to ourselves. And the disciples of Christ, if it be not their own fault, may enjoy holy security and peace of mind, when all around is in disorder. But they must take heed that they are not drawn away from Christ and their duty to him, by the sufferings they…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-6Jesus warned his followers not to be deceived by false messiahs. Many people would come claiming, ‘I am He,’ and would lead many others astray. These people claimed either to be the long-awaited Jewish Messiah or to speak with the Messiah’s authority. Some examples include Theudas the Galilean (Acts 5:36), Simon, the son of Gioras, and John of Gischala, who tricked many people in the AD 60s.Read the comment
