Context of Isaiah 49:18
16Look, I have inscribed your name on my palms; your walls are constantly before me. 17Your children hurry back, while those who destroyed and devastated you depart. Look all around you! All of them gather to you. As surely as I live,” says the Lord, “you will certainly wear all of them like jewelry; you will put them on as if you were a bride. 19Yes, your land lies in ruins; it is desolate and devastated. But now you will be too small to hold your residents, and those who devoured you will be far away. 20Yet the children born during your time of bereavement will say within your hearing, ‘This place is too cramped for us, make room for us so we can live here.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18Bind them on thee, as a bride doeth "Bind them about thee, as a bride her jewels" - The end of the sentence is manifestly imperfect. Does a bride bind her children, or her new subjects, about her? Sion clothes herself with her children, as a bride clothes herself, - with what? some other thing certainly. The Septuagint help us out in this difficulty, and supply the lost word: ̔ · as a bride her ornaments. כלה ככליה kichleyha callah, or כליה ככלה kecallah…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-23Verses 18-23 Zion is addressed as an afflicted widow, bereaved of her children. Numbers flock to her, and she is assured that they come to be a comfort to her. There are times when the church is desolate and few in number; yet its desolations shall not last for ever, and God will repair them. God can raise up friends for returning Israelites, even among Gentiles. They shall bring their children, and make them thy children. Let all deal tenderly and…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1818. As Zion is often compared to a bride (Is 54:5), so the accession of converts is like bridal ornaments ("jewels," Is 62:3; Mal 3:17). Her literal children are, however, more immediately meant, as the context refers to their restoration; and only secondarily to her spiritual children by conversion to Christ. Israel shall be the means of the final complete conversion of the nations (Mi 5:7; Ro 11:12, 15). as a bride--namely, binds on her ornaments.Read the comment
