Context of Isaiah 49:18
16I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. Your walls are always in my presence. 17Your children will hurry back. Those who destroyed you and laid waste to you will leave you. Look up, look around, and watch! All of your children are gathering together and returning to you. “I solemnly swear as I live,” declares the Lord, “you will wear all of them like jewels and display them on yourself as a bride would.” 19Though you are destroyed and demolished and your land is in ruins, you will be too crowded for ⌞your⌟ people now. Those who devoured you will be long gone. 20The children taken from you will say to you, “This place is too crowded for me. Make room for me to live here.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18Bind them on thee, as a bride doeth "Bind them about thee, as a bride her jewels" - The end of the sentence is manifestly imperfect. Does a bride bind her children, or her new subjects, about her? Sion clothes herself with her children, as a bride clothes herself, - with what? some other thing certainly. The Septuagint help us out in this difficulty, and supply the lost word: ̔ · as a bride her ornaments. כלה ככליה kichleyha callah, or כליה ככלה kecallah…Read the comment

All these gather themselves - That is, from a far country, from the north, the west, and the south, Isaiah 49:12. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-23Verses 18-23 Zion is addressed as an afflicted widow, bereaved of her children. Numbers flock to her, and she is assured that they come to be a comfort to her. There are times when the church is desolate and few in number; yet its desolations shall not last for ever, and God will repair them. God can raise up friends for returning Israelites, even among Gentiles. They shall bring their children, and make them thy children. Let all deal tenderly and…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1818. As Zion is often compared to a bride (Is 54:5), so the accession of converts is like bridal ornaments ("jewels," Is 62:3; Mal 3:17). Her literal children are, however, more immediately meant, as the context refers to their restoration; and only secondarily to her spiritual children by conversion to Christ. Israel shall be the means of the final complete conversion of the nations (Mi 5:7; Ro 11:12, 15). as a bride--namely, binds on her ornaments.Read the comment
