Context of Isaiah 26:14
12Lord, you will grant us peace; all we have accomplished is really from you. 13O Lord our God, others have ruled us, but you alone are the one we worship. Those we served before are dead and gone. Their departed spirits will never return! You attacked them and destroyed them, and they are long forgotten. 15O Lord, you have made our nation great; yes, you have made us great. You have extended our borders, and we give you the glory! 16Lord, in distress we searched for you. We prayed beneath the burden of your discipline.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14They are dead - That is, the kings and tyrants to whom reference is made in Isaiah 26:13. The principal enemies of the Jews, who had oppressed them, were slain when Babylon was taken by Cyrus (see the notes at Isaiah 14:9-10; compare Psalm 88:11; Proverbs 2:18; Proverbs 9:18; Proverbs 21:16). The sense here is, that they had died and gone to the land of shades, and were now unable anymore to reach or injure the people of God. Therefore - Or rather, “for”…Read the comment
