“With my soul have I desired Thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek Thee early: for when Thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the earth will learn righteousness. Let favor be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the Lord.” [Isaiah 26:1, 2, 4-10.]Isaiah 26:1-13

“In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.” [Isaiah 30:15.] Take this with you throughout the year. The strength of every soul is in God and not in man. Quietness and confidence is to be the strength of all who give their hearts to God. Christ has not a casual interest in us but an interest stronger than a mother for her child. Says the prophet, “Can a woman forget her sucking child? ... yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.” [Isaiah 49:15.] Our Saviour has purchased us by human suffering and sorrow, by insult, reproach, abuse, mockery, rejection, and death. He is watching over you, trembling child of God. He will make you secure under His protection. Through His servant He says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” [Isaiah 26:3.] “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” “They that wait on the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abideth forever.” [Psalm 27:14; 125:1.]12LtMs, Ms 15, 1897, par. 14
“In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will the Lord appoint for walls and bulwarks. Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee. Trust in the Lord forever; for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.” [Isaiah 26:1-4.] I entreat of all families and churches to read and study this Scripture, and act in accordance with the Word of God.12LtMs, Ms 15, 1897, par. 15
“Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us; for thou also hast wrought all our works in us. O Lord our God, other Lords beside thee have had dominion over us; but by thee only will we make mention of thy name.” [Verses 12, 13.] Christ is our Ruler, and to man is not given power to lord it over the flock of God. The minister is to be one with the believers, not closing himself with himself as a superior of whom his fellow men must be afraid.Isaiah 26:1-21

The chapters we were reading in course were in Isaiah. He read with us, and the very portions of Scripture which specified his sin was read by himself. We thought we would give him every chance to make the application to his own case and this might awaken in him a remorse, but it did not seem to have the least influence. He did that night—after we labored with him a long while and then left him with Brother Rousseau and Brother Prescott—confess his sins of vileness, and the conditions were plainly stated, if he would break away at once, and return to New Zealand, we would furnish him money. But he said positively he would not go to New Zealand.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

God chooses His workers from all classes of people, and imbues them with His own spirit. So it was in ancient times. The men and women of God’s selection were of intense earnestness, full of zeal. The last books of the Old Testament show us workers taken from the laborers in the field. Others were men of high ability and extensive learning, but the Lord gave them visions and messages. These men of the Old Testament spoke of the things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sight reached down to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

This parable is for the interest of all to understand. It is the science of salvation, which is the true science essential for all to understand. It is the Gospel of saving grace. The Gospel covenant is represented by a marriage. The dinner is prepared, the dinner ready. The Word of the living God, to be received and practiced here, is the preparation [needed] to come into church relationship. The feast is the blessing of pardon. The removing, taking away, of their sins is the work of the free access of grace, to the riches of His glory. [See] Isaiah 25-26. What a preparation God has made! The wedding garment is the righteousness of Christ.Isaiah 26:2

By this time the 144,000 were all sealed and perfectly united. On their foreheads was written, God, New Jerusalem, and a glorious Star containing Jesus’ new name. [Revelation 3:12.] At our happy, holy state the wicked were enraged, and would rush violently up to lay hands on us to thrust us in prison, when we would stretch forth the hand in the name of the Lord, and the wicked would fall helpless to the ground. Then it was that the synagogue of Satan knew that God had loved us who could wash one another’s feet, and salute the holy brethren with a holy kiss, and they worshipped at our feet. [Revelation 3:9.] Soon our eyes were drawn to the East, for a small black cloud had appeared about half as large as a man’s hand, which we all knew was the Sign of the Son of Man. [Matthew 24:30.] We all in solemn silence gazed on the cloud as it drew nearer, lighter, and brighter, glorious, and still more glorious, till it was a great white cloud. [Revelation 14:14.] The bottom appeared like fire, a rainbow was over it, around the cloud were ten thousand angels singing a most lovely song. And on it sat the Son of Man, [Luke 21:27.] on his head were crowns, [Revelation 19:12.] his hair was white and curly and lay on his shoulders. [Revelation 1:14.] His feet had the appearance of fire, [Revelation 1:15.] in his right hand was a sharp sickle, [Revelation 14:14.] in his left a silver trumpet. [1 Thessalonians 4:16.] His eyes were as a flame of fire, [Revelation 1:14.] which searched his children through and through. Then all faces gathered paleness, and those that God had rejected gathered blackness. Then we all cried out, who shall be able to stand? Is my robe spotless? Then the angels ceased to sing, and there was some time of awful silence, [Revelation 8:1.] when Jesus spoke. Those who have clean hands and a pure heart shall be able to stand, my grace is sufficient for you. At this, our faces lighted up, and joy filled every heart. And the angels struck a note higher and sung again while the cloud drew still nearer the earth. Then Jesus’ silver trumpet sounded, as he descended on the cloud, wrapped in flames of fire [2 Thessalonians 1:7, 8] He gazed on the graves of the sleeping saints, then raised his eyes and hands to heaven and cried out, [John 5:25.] Awake! Awake! Awake! ye that sleep in the dust, and arise. Then there was a mighty earthquake. The graves opened, and the dead came up clothed with immortality. The 144,000 shouted, Hallelujah! as they recognized their friends who had been torn from them by death, and in the same moment we were changed and caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air. [1 Thessalonians 4:17.] We all entered the cloud together, and were seven days ascending to the sea of glass, when Jesus brought along the crowns and with his own right hand placed them on our heads. [2 Esdras 2:43.] He gave us harps of gold and palms of victory. [Revelation 15:2. Revelation 7:9.] Here on the sea of glass the 144,000 stood in a perfect square. Some of them had very bright crowns, others not so bright. Some crowns appeared heavy with stars, while others had but few. All were perfectly satisfied with their crowns. And they were all clothed with a glorious white mantle from their shoulders to their feet. [Revelation 7:9.] Angels were all about us as we marched over the sea of glass to the gate of the City. Jesus raised his mighty glorious arm, laid hold of the gate and swung it back on its golden hinges, and said to us, You have washed your robes in my blood, stood stiffly*The original publication had the spelling “stifly.” for my truth, enter in. [Isaiah 26:2.] We all marched in and felt we had a perfect right in the City. Here we saw the tree of life, and the throne of God. Out of the throne came a pure river of water, and on either side of the river was the tree of life. [Revelation 22:1, 2.] On one side of the river was a trunk of a tree and a trunk on the other side of the river, both of pure transparent gold.A Word to the Little Flock

Then commenced the jubilee, when the land should rest. I saw the pious slave rise in triumph and victory, and shake off the chains that bound him, while his wicked master was in confusion, and knew not what to do; for the wicked could not understand the words of the voice of God. [Daniel 12:10.] Soon appeared the great white cloud. [Revelation 14:14.] It looked more lovely than ever before. On it sat the Son of Man. [Luke 21:27.] At first we did not see Jesus on the cloud, but as it drew near the earth, we could behold his lovely person. This cloud when it first appeared was the Sign of the Son of Man in heaven. [Matthew 24:30.] The voice of the Son of God called forth the sleeping saints, [John 5:25-28.] clothed with a glorious immortality. The living saints were changed in a moment, and caught up with them in the cloudy chariot. [1 Thessalonians 4:17.] It looked all over glorious as it rolled upwards. On either side of the chariot were wings, and beneath it wheels. And as the chariot rolled upwards, the wheels cried Holy, and the wings as they moved, cried Holy, and the retinue of Holy Angels around the cloud cried Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty. And the saints in the cloud cried Glory, Hallelujah. And the cloudy chariot rolled upwards to the Holy City. Jesus threw open the gates of the Golden City, and led us in. [Isaiah 26:2.] Here we were made welcome, for we had kept the “Commandments of God,” and had a “right to the tree of life.” [Revelation 22:14.]Homeward Bound

God weighs motives, purposes, character. All men are weighed in the balances of the sanctuary, and God would have all realize this fact. Hannah said, “The Lord is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed.” 1 Samuel 2:3. David hath said, “Men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.” Psalm 62:9. Isaiah says: “Thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just.” Isaiah 26:2. “All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits.” Proverbs 16:2.Isaiah 26:3

AA 510.1
Until his latest hour the life of Paul testified to the truth of his words to the Corinthians: “God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.” 2 Corinthians 4:6-10. His sufficiency was not in himself, but in the presence and agency of the divine Spirit that filled his soul and brought every thought into subjection to the will of Christ. The prophet declares, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.” Isaiah 26:3. The life of Paul, to its very latest hour, testified to the truth of his words in the second epistle to the Corinthians: “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. His sufficiency was not in himself but in the presence and agency of the divine Spirit that filled his soul and brought every thought into subjection to the will of Christ. The fact that his own life exemplified the truth he proclaimed gave convincing power to both his preaching and his deportment. How wretched will it be for those who have had no faith, no confidence in God! Amid the rough waters and the storm and the fog, I felt that Jesus was never nearer to me, never more precious. My faith reposed in God, however dark the surroundings. The faith of the believer is like the ship’s compass. The ship may be struggling with the waves and by the tempest, tossed by the everrestless sea; yet the compass keeps its position, doing its work, maintaining its level amid plunging and tossing, pointing to the pole. I felt that my soul could stay upon God whatever comes, calm waves or boisterous. We may be driven by fierce winds, the fog like a pillar of cloud may surround us, but my soul had comfort in God. My faith like the compass ever turned steadily to my Redeemer, to Him who can rebuke the stormy waters and say, Peace be still. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.” Isaiah 26:3.Gospel Workers (1915 ed.)

He has paid the ransom money for my soul, and I want to give to Him wholesome service, not a sickly offering. There is a balm in Gilead; there is a Physician there. Do not dwell upon subjects the people cannot comprehend, but dwell on those subjects that will have the largest amount of Christ in them—His law, of course, is the message for this time—and come close to the people. Your success is in God. Commune with God and guard yourself, for your plans that often seem wise to you need remodeling before they can be safe for you to follow. When you draw out your heart toward God by an actual trust, when you have urged a particular promise to God in your prayer, then believe in submission, yet hope, for God never yet has failed a believing, trusting soul. We may lay hold on God by virtue of a double chain: by virtue of the single promise that first drew out your soul to ask, [and] then another promise made if you trust. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, who putteth his trust in Thee,” (this is your legacy) “because he trusteth in Thee.” [Isaiah 26:3.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

It is our privilege to use every God-appointed means in correspondence with our faith, and then trust in God, when we have urged the promise. If there is need of a surgical operation, and the physician is willing to undertake the case, it is not a denial of faith to have the operation performed. After the patient has committed his will to the will of God, let him trust, drawing nigh to the great Physician, the Mighty Healer, and giving himself up in perfect trust. The Lord will honor his faith in the very manner He sees is for His own name’s glory. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee. COL 173.2
The Lord declares that He will be honored by those who draw nigh to Him, who faithfully do His service. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee, because he trusteth in Thee.” Isaiah 26:3. The arm of Omnipotence is outstretched to lead us onward and still onward. Go forward, the Lord says; I will send you help. It is for My name’s glory that you ask, and you shall receive. I will be honored before those who are watching for your failure. They shall see My word triumph gloriously. “All things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” Matthew 21:22.COL 178.4
The time is near when He will say, “Come, My people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. For, behold, the Lord cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.” Isaiah 26:20, 21. Men who claim to be Christians may now defraud and oppress the poor; they may rob the widow and fatherless; they may indulge their Satanic hatred because they cannot control the consciences of God’s people; but for all this God will bring them into judgment. They “shall have judgment without mercy” that have “showed no mercy.” (James 2:13.) Not long hence they will stand before the Judge of all the earth, to render an account for the pain they have caused to the bodies and souls of His heritage. They may now indulge in false accusations, they may deride those whom God has appointed to do His work, they may consign His believing ones to prison, to the chain gang, to banishment, to death; but for every pang of anguish, every tear shed, they must answer. God will reward them double for their sins. Concerning Babylon, the symbol of the apostate church, He says to His ministers of judgment, “Her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.” Revelation 18:5, 6.Isaiah 26:4

Isaiah describes Him as the “rock of ages,” and “the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.” Isaiah 26:4 (margin); 32:2. And he records the precious promise, bringing vividly to mind the living stream that flowed for Israel: “When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.” “I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground;” “in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.” The invitation is given, “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.” Isaiah 41:17; 44:3; 35:6; 55:1. And in the closing pages of the Sacred Word this invitation is echoed. The river of the water of life, “clear as crystal,” proceeds from the throne of God and the Lamb; and the gracious call is ringing down through the ages, “Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17.That I May Know Him

In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, I beseech the people of God to depend upon the Lord for strength. Beware how you place men where God should be. We are not safe in taking men as our authority or our guide, for they will surely disappoint us. Individually, we are to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling, “for it is God that worketh in us, both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” [Philippians 2:13.] We have a high calling in Christ Jesus; we are carrying forward a vast and holy work, and God calls upon each one to uplift His standard in the sight of this world and of the universe of heaven, by the power of the Lord Jehovah, in whom is “everlasting strength.” [Isaiah 26:4.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

The word I have for you this morning is, “The Lord Jehovah is ours, in Him is everlasting strength.” [See Isaiah 26:4.] Then comes forth a burst of praise mingled with humility, “Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy and thy truth’s sake.” [Psalm 115:1.] The Lord expects His children for whom He is doing so much to respond to the weighty evidence He has given them of the great love and mercy He has manifested unto them. When their faith is tried, the enemies of God and of His people watch them critically to see if there is not a chance for Satan to wedge himself in with his great temptations. Where is now your God? Will the children of God for whom He has done so much answer in cheerful, trustful words, “Our God is in the heavens; He hath done and will do whatsoever He hath pleased”? The contrast is then made plain in response to the scornful retort. “Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.” [Verses 3, 4.] And then is repeated the useless dependence that they have in their idols. Will the chosen people of God look in faith to the Source of all might and power, and sing of the mercies of God?Isaiah 26:7

Chapter 29—Satan’s Enmity Against the Law
PP 332.2
Says the prophet, “When Thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness. Let favor be showed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness, ... and will not behold the majesty of Jehovah.” Isaiah 26:9, 10. Thus it was after the Flood. Released from His judgments, the inhabitants of the earth again rebelled against the Lord. Twice God’s covenant and His statutes had been rejected by the world. Both the people before the Flood and the descendants of Noah cast off the divine authority. Then God entered into covenant with Abraham, and took to Himself a people to become the depositaries of His law. To seduce and destroy this people, Satan began at once to lay his snares. The children of Jacob were tempted to contract marriages with the heathen and to worship their idols. But Joseph was faithful to God, and his fidelity was a constant testimony to the true faith. It was to quench this light that Satan worked through the envy of Joseph’s brothers to cause him to be sold as a slave in a heathen land. God overruled events, however, so that the knowledge of Himself should be given to the people of Egypt. Both in the house of Potiphar and in the prison Joseph received an education and training that, with the fear of God, prepared him for his high position as prime minister of the nation. From the palace of the Pharaohs his influence was felt throughout the land, and the knowledge of God spread far and wide. The Israelites in Egypt also became prosperous and wealthy, and such as were true to God exerted a widespread influence. The idolatrous priests were filled with alarm as they saw the new religion finding favor. Inspired by Satan with his own enmity toward the God of heaven, they set themselves to quench the light. To the priests was committed the education of the heir to the throne, and it was this spirit of determined opposition to God and zeal for idolatry that molded the character of the future monarch, and led to cruelty and oppression toward the Hebrews.PP 339.1
The time is not far distant when God will arise to vindicate His insulted authority. “The Lord cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.” Isaiah 26:21. “But who may abide the day of His coming? and who shall stand when He appeareth?” Malachi 3:2. The people of Israel, because of their sinfulness, were forbidden to approach the mount when God was about to descend upon it to proclaim His law, lest they should be consumed by the burning glory of His presence. If such manifestations of His power marked the place chosen for the proclamation of God’s law, how terrible must be His tribunal when He comes for the execution of these sacred statutes. How will those who have trampled upon His authority endure His glory in the great day of final retribution? The terrors of Sinai were to represent to the people the scenes of the judgment. The sound of a trumpet summoned Israel to meet with God. The voice of the Archangel and the trump of God shall summon, from the whole earth, both the living and the dead to the presence of their Judge. The Father and the Son, attended by a multitude of angels, were present upon the mount. At the great judgment day Christ will come “in the glory of His Father with His angels.” Matthew 16:27. He shall then sit upon the throne of His glory, and before Him shall be gathered all nations.Isaiah 26:10

As Christ rose, proclaiming in triumph, “I am the resurrection and the life,” He brought from the dead as types and pledges of the general resurrection saints that had been co-laborers with God. These bowed at the Saviour’s feet in homage, and then went into the city, revealing themselves to many, and declaring that Christ had risen from the dead, and they had risen with him. Thus was immortalized the sacred truth of the resurrection. The risen saints bore witness to the truth of the words, “Thy dead men shall live; together with my dead body shall they arise.” Their resurrection was an illustration of the fulfillment of the prophecy, “Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust; for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.” [Isaiah 26:19.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

But the resurrection of Christ was certain. On every hand the Sanhedrim was met by proofs. When Christ rose, proclaiming in triumph, “I am the resurrection and the life” [John 11:25], he brought from the dead as types and pledges of the general resurrection, saints that had been co-laborers with God. These bowed at the Saviour’s feet in adoration, and then went into the city, revealing themselves to many, and declaring that Christ had risen from the dead, and that they had risen with him. The Scripture reading, by Elder George B. The reading closed with a few verses especially illustrative of Mrs. White’s life experience: Psalm 40:9, 10 and Mark 14:8.Maranatha

After His resurrection, Christ did not show Himself to any save His followers; but testimony in regard to His resurrection was not wanting. Those who were raised with Christ “appeared unto many” (Matthew 27:53), declaring, Christ has risen from the dead, and we are risen with Him. They bore testimony in the city to the fulfillment of the scripture, “Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead” (Isaiah 26:19). These saints contradicted the lie which the Roman guard had been hired to circulate—that the disciples had come by night and stolen Him away. This testimony could not be silenced.Selected Messages Book 2

Christ claims all those as His who have believed in His name. The vitalizing power of the Spirit of Christ dwelling in the mortal body binds every believing soul to Jesus Christ. When tempted to sin let us remember that Jesus is pleading for us in the heavenly sanctuary. When we put away our sins and come to Him in faith, He takes our names on His lips and presents them to His Father, saying, “I have graven them upon the palms of my hands; I know them by name.” And the command goes forth to the angels to protect them. Then in the day of fierce trial He will say, “Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast” (Isaiah 26:20). What are the chambers in which they are to hide? They are the protection of Christ and holy angels. The people of God are not at this time all in one place. They are in different companies and in all parts of the earth, and they will be tried singly, not in groups. Everyone must stand the test for himself.Maranatha

When this enmity against the law of God becomes so intense, we may know that Satan is imbuing human minds with the same hatred of truth and of the precepts of God as turned the heart of Cain against his brother Abel. In this time of prevailing iniquity it is essential that we individually draw nigh unto God. His voice is heard, saying: “Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. For, behold, the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.” [Isaiah 26:20, 21.] It is possible for men to go so far in disobedience that it will be necessary for God to arise and let them know that He is God, and that He will interpose and punish the world for its iniquity.Maranatha

God will have a separate and peculiar people. Their faith is peculiar. Their prospects are peculiar and glorious, and if they do not consider the heavenly inducement offered them of sufficient value to lead them to renounce the fashions of the world, when God rises up to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity, they must perish with them. Please read Isaiah 26:21; James 4:4. “Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” 1 John 2:15: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. He goeth out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the world for their iniquity. “The earth shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.” [Isaiah 26:21.] Where, I ask, is the burden for souls that are perishing out of Christ? Who will go forth without the camp bearing the reproach? Who will leave pleasant homes, and dear ties of relationship, and carry the precious light of truth to far off lands, but not beyond the domain of God? Every day and every moment <comes> to those who have entrusted to them the light of truth with terrible significance, that men and women in every clime and land are fitting themselves—for weal or woe fixing their own destinies—for eternity.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

The great problem to solve is, how to prevent the loss of the souls of those who have been guilty of unfaithfulness. Brethren, work with the Spirit of Christ, with the mind of Christ, to correct existing evils. The wrongdoer will have the sympathy of wrongdoers, but faithful shepherds of the flock must maintain an elevated standard, and yet teach that the Star of hope is still shining. Work on patiently, but rebuke sin firmly, giving it no sanction. The world is soon to be left by the angel of mercy, and the seven last plagues are to be poured out. Sin, shame, sorrow, and darkness are on every side. God still holds out to men the precious privilege of exchanging darkness for light, error for truth, sin for righteousness, but His patience and mercy will not always wait. The storm is gathering; the bolts of God’s wrath are soon to fall; and when He shall begin to punish the transgressors there will be no period of respite until the end. He shall come forth “to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.” Isaiah 26:21. Only those will stand who are sanctified through the truth in the love of God. They will be hid with Christ in God until the desolation shall be overpast.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Those who make the word of God the man of their counsel will esteem the law of God and their appreciation of it will rise in proportion as it is set aside and despised. Loyal subjects of Christ’s kingdom will re-echo the words of David and say, “It is time for thee, Lord to work; for they have made void thy law. Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.” [Verses 126, 127.] This is the position those will occupy who love God sincerely and their neighbors as themselves. They will exalt the commandments in proportion as contempt increases. The point is fast being reached when the iniquity of transgressors will be to the full. God gives nations a certain time of probation. He sends light and evidence that if received will save the; but if refused as the Jews refused light, indignation and punishment will fall upon them. If men refuse to be benefitted and choose darkness rather than light, they will reap the results of their choice. “Behold, the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; the also shall disclose her blood and shall no longer cover her slain.” [Isaiah 26:21.] The professed Christian world is advancing as did the Jewish nation from one degree of sinfulness is a greater degree, refusing warning after warning, and rejecting a thus saith the Lord, while crediting the fables of men. The Lord God will soon arise in his wrath, and pour out his judgments upon those who are repeating the sins of the inhabitants of the Noatic world. Those whose hearts are fully set in them to do evil as were the hearts of the inhabitant of Sodom, will like them be destroyed. The fact that God has had long forbearance, patience, and mercy, the fact that his judgments have been long delayed will not make the punishments any less severe when it does come.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

All who make the Word of God the man of their counsel will esteem the law of God in proportion as it is set aside and despised. The echo from David will be heard by the loyal and true subjects of Christ’s kingdom: “They have made void Thy law. Therefore I love Thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.” [Verses 126, 127.] This is the only safe and true position that those who love God sincerely and their neighbor as themselves can take. The love and steadfast promotion of the commandments of God grow with the increasing contempt which professed Christians, in harmony with the world, put on these commandments which are a transcript of the character of God. The point is fast being reached when the iniquity of the transgressor will be full. God allows nations a probation, a certain time, and He sends light and evidence which, if received, will save them. But if they refuse the message as the Jews refused the light that came into the world for their benefit, if they choose darkness rather than light, they can expect nothing but indignation and punishment. “He cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for her iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and no more cover her slain.” [Isaiah 26:21.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

There is a greatness that will not in the day of God be coveted by any person who in human wisdom has glorified these men who have, many of them, obtained their Lord’s money through robbery and deceit of the poor and needy, and turning away the stranger from his right. The Lord has been a witness to every unjust transaction. Where will the lauded great men be on that day when “the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain” (Isaiah 26:21)? “Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.” [James 5:2.] While poor suffering fellow beings were naked and you highly exalted because you were rich, you have left your poor fellow creatures to hunger and cold and nakedness.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

How little we can do in our own power to help the people that are misled by the false theories that are ever kept before them by their false shepherds! Our earnest cry to God is, “It is time, O Lord, for thee to work; for they have made void thy law. Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.” [Psalm 119:126, 127.] We are in the midst of troublous times. Catholicism is making sure and decided inroads, embracing in its cruel arms the Protestant world. In disloyalty men and women are making void the law of God, and He will punish them for their iniquity. “The earth shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.” [Isaiah 26:21.] “The Lord is slow to anger and great in power; and will not at all acquit the wicked; the Lord hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.” [Nahum 1:3.]Manuscript Releases, vol. 19 [Nos. 1360-1419]

Then we read, “As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be when the Son of man shall be revealed.” The wicked will be destroyed, not by water but by fire. But before the Son of God shall come, He sends the warning that He is soon to come “to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain” [Isaiah 26:21]. Now, Christ says that just before His coming such a state of things will exist as existed in the old world. They did not repent before God but went right on “eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away.” Well, is it a sin to eat or drink? When we carry it to excess, it is a sin. When we carry the marrying and giving in marriage to excess, this also is a sin.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

The Lord declares that the end of all things is at hand. Increasing wickedness is seen on every side, and this wickedness must be met in the wisdom of God. The law of God is to be exalted. It was because of transgression that God destroyed the earth with the waters of a flood. It is because of transgression at the present time that He declares, “I will punish the world for their iniquity. The earth shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.” [See Isaiah 26:21.] At that day the slain of the Lord will be from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth. This record of crime and wickedness is being repeated over and over again in San Francisco; and the same violence and iniquity is making other cities as very Sodom in the sight of heaven. Again we read: “In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah: we have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.” Isaiah 26:1. What a comforting statement! And how truly have we seen this exemplified in our individual experience, in our experiences as families, in our work as a church, as a conference, as laborers in the mission field! When in our personal experience we feel that the enemy is coming in like a flood, when he is pressing us with temptations sore, approaching us from some unexpected quarter in an effort to ensnare and dishearten, O, how much we need help! And as we look about us, as we appeal to men for sympathy and counsel, how inadequate the response! But, O, there is a Source of help, of unfailing strength; and when we prostrate ourselves before God, and confess our sinfulness, our errors, our ignorance, and plead with him for wisdom, for strength, for forgiveness, for salvation, O, how sweet is such communion with our God; and there is so much for us to enjoy, such treasures of grace for us all, if we would but come to the Saviour more simply, more frequently, more trustingly.GCB June 1, 1913, par. 3
