Commentaries on 2 Corinthians 11:33

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 33Through a window in a basket - Probably the house was situated on the wall of the city. See the notes on this history, Acts 9:23-25; (note). In 2 Corinthians 11:2; of this chapter the apostle most evidently alludes to the history of the temptation, and fall of Adam and Eve, as related in Genesis 3:1, etc.; and which fall is there attributed to the agency of a being called נחש nachash, here, and in other places, translated , serpent. In my notes on Genesis…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33And through a window - That is, through a little door or aperture in the wall; perhaps something like an embrasure, that might have been large enough to allow a man to pass through it. Luke says Acts 9:25 that they let him down “by the wall.” But there is no inconsistency. They doubtless first passed him through the embrasure or loop-hole in the wall, and then let him down gently by the side of it. Luke does not say it was over the top of the wall, but…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-33Verses 22-33 The apostle gives an account of his labours and sufferings; not out of pride or vain-glory, but to the honour of God, who enabled him to do and suffer so much for the cause of Christ; and shows wherein he excelled the false apostles, who tried to lessen his character and usefulness. It astonishes us to reflect on this account of his dangers, hardships, and sufferings, and to observe his patience, perseverance, diligence, cheerfulness, and…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-33As a final "boast" of his weakness, Paul shares the story of his escape from Damascus a few years after his conversion (see Acts 9:23–25; Galatians 1:15–18). King Aretas IV of Nabataea controlled Damascus only after AD 37, following the death of Emperor Tiberius (see Josephus, Antiquities 18.5.1–3). The mention of Aretas dates Paul's escape from Damascus between AD 37 and the end of Aretas's reign in AD 39 or 40.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-332Co 11:1-33. Through Jealousy over the Corinthians, Who Made More Account of the False Apostles Than of Him, He Is Obliged to Commend Himself as in Many Respects Superior. 1. Would to God--Translate as Greek, "I would that." bear with me--I may ask not unreasonably to be borne with; not so the false apostles (2Co 11:4, 20). my--not in the oldest manuscripts. folly--The Greek is a milder term than that for "foolishness" in 1Co 3:19; Mt 5:22; 25:2.
