Context of 1 Corinthians 7:6
4The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife. 5Do not deprive each other of sexual relations, unless you both agree to refrain from sexual intimacy for a limited time so you can give yourselves more completely to prayer. Afterward, you should come together again so that Satan won’t be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control. I say this as a concession, not as a command. 7But I wish everyone were single, just as I am. Yet each person has a special gift from God, of one kind or another. 8So I say to those who aren’t married and to widows—it’s better to stay unmarried, just as I am.

Thus Rabbi Tancum: "The washing of hands before meat is in our own power; washing after meat is commanded." In relation to this point Dr. Lightfoot produces some examples from the Jewish writers: "The man is commanded…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6But I speak this by permission - It is not quite certain whether the word “this” ( ͂ touto), in this verse, refers to what precedes, or to what follows. I am inclined to think that the mare natural construction is the true one. and that Paul refers to what he had said in 1 Corinthians 7:5. Most recent commentators, as Macknight…Read the comment
