Context of 1 Corinthians 12:10
8To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. 9The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have. 12The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.

Commentaries on 1 Corinthians 12:10
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10To another the working of miracles - Commentators have felt some perplexity in distinguishing this from what is mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:9, of the gift of healing. it is evident that the apostle there refers to the power of working miracles in healing inveterate and violent diseases. The expression used here, “working of miracles” ( ̓́ ́ energēmata dunameōn) refers probably to the more “extraordinary” and “unusual” kinds of miracles; to those which…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10Prophesying means delivering a special message from God, not just predicting the future (see 11:4–5; 13:2, 8; 14:1–25, 29–33; 1 Thessalonians 5:20; compare Acts 13:1–2; 21:4, 10–11). The gift to discern if a message is from God's Spirit or another spirit is essential for any Christian community open to God's word (see 1 Corinthians 14:29; 1 Thessalonians 5:19–21; compare Acts 16:16–18; 1 John 4:1–3).
