Context of Revelation 21:25

23The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 25And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day - It shall be constantly open, allowing free ingress and egress to all who reside there. The language is derived from Isaiah 60:11. See the notes on that place. Applied to the future state of the blessed, it would seem to mean, that while this will be their permanent abode, yet that the dwellers there will not be prisoners. The universe will be open to them. They will be permitted to go forth and visit…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-27Verses 22-27 Perfect and direct communion with God, will more than supply the place of gospel institutions. And what words can more full express the union and co-equality of the Son with the Father, in the Godhead? What a dismal world would this be, if it were not for the light of the sun! What is there in heaven that supplies its place? The glory of God lightens that city, and the Lamb is the Light thereof. God in Christ will be an everlasting Fountain…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 24-25the nations: God’s promise to Abraham comes true (Genesis 12:3; see Isaiah 2:3). In Revelation, the kings of the world often represent God’s enemies (Revelation 6:15; 17:18; 18:3, 9). Now that these enemies are destroyed (Revelation 16:9, 11; 19:1–2, 19–21), the image is of God’s glory shown in those who have repented (Revelation 14:6–7; compare 11:13) and walk with God (5:9; 15:4). The gates that are never closed contrast with ancient times when closed…Read the comment
