Context of Mark 1:14
12At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” 16As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Now after that John was put in prison - John was imprisoned by Herod, Matthew 14:3. Jesus came into Galilee - He left Judea and went into the more retired country of Galilee. He supposed that if he remained in Judea, Herod would also persecute him and attempt to take his life. His time of death had not come, and he therefore prudently sought safety in retirement. Hence, we may learn that when we have great duties to perform for the church of God, we are…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-22Verses 14-22 Jesus began to preach in Galilee, after that John was put in prison. If some be laid aside, others shall be raised up, to carry on the same work. Observe the great truths Christ preached. By repentance we give glory to our Creator whom we have offended; by faith we give glory to our Redeemer who came to save us from our sins. Christ has joined these two together, and let no man think to put them asunder. Christ puts honour upon those who…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14Jesus began his ministry after John was arrested by Herod Antipas (the ruler of Galilee). There was some overlap between their ministries (John 3:22–24; 4:1–2), but most of the ministry of Jesus happened after John’s. John belongs mainly to the old order (the time before the full ministry of Jesus; Matthew 11:7–14), while Jesus brings the new. Both men carried out God’s plan, and both were arrested and put to death (Mark 6:14–29; 9:31; 10:33). Jesus…Read the comment
