Context of Obadiah 1:10
8At that time,” the Lord says, “I will destroy the wise sages of Edom! the advisers from Esau’s mountain! 9Your warriors will be shattered, O Teman, so that everyone will be destroyed from Esau’s mountain! “Because you violently slaughtered your relatives, the people of Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be destroyed forever. 11You stood aloof while strangers took his army captive, and foreigners advanced to his gates. When they cast lots over Jerusalem, you behaved as though you were in league with them. 12You should not have gloated when your relatives suffered calamity. You should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah when they were destroyed. You should not have boasted when they suffered adversity.

Commentaries on Obadiah 1:10
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10For thy violence against thy brother Jacob - By this term the Israelites in general are understood; for the two brothers, - Jacob, from whom sprang the Jews, and Esau, from whom sprang the Idumeans or Edomites, - are here put for the whole people or descendants of both. We need not look for particular cases of the violence of the Edomites against the Jews. Esau, their founder, was not more inimical to his brother Jacob, who deprived him of his birthright…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10For thy violence against thy brother Jacob - To Israel God had commanded: (Deuteronomy 23:7-8 (Deuteronomy 23:8, Deuteronomy 23:9 in the Hebrew text)), “Thou shalt not abbor an Edomite, for he is thy brother. The children that are begotten of them shall enter into the congregation of the Lord in their third generation.” Edom did the contrary to all this. “Violence” includes all sorts of ill treatment, from one with whom “might is right,” “because it is in…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-14Because of the violence against your brother Jacob: The reason for Esau’s condemnation is explained in Obadiah 1:10 (see also Isaiah 34; Jeremiah 49:7–22; Joel 3:19; Amos 1:11–12) and expanded in Obadiah 1:11–14, where Edom’s betrayal is described. In legal terms, these verses provide evidence for the charge of breaking a covenant.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. against thy brother--This aggravates the sin of Esau, that it was against him who was his brother by birth and by circumcision. The posterity of Esau followed in the steps of their father's hatred to Jacob by violence against Jacob's seed (Ge 27:41). Jacob--not merely his own brother, but his twin brother; hence the name Jacob, not Israel, is here put emphatically. Compare De 23:7 for the opposite feeling which Jacob's seed was commanded to entertain…Read the comment
