Context of Matthew 22:14
12And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ But he had nothing to say. 13Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Tie him up hand and foot and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!’ For many are called, but few are chosen.” 15Then the Pharisees went out and planned together to entrap him with his own words. 16They sent to him their disciples along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You do not court anyone’s favor because you show no partiality.

This is an allusion to the Roman…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Many are called, but few are chosen - Our Saviour often uses this expression. It was probably proverbial. The Jews had been called, but few of them had been chosen to life. The great mass of the nation was wicked, and they showed by their lives that they were not chosen to salvation. The Gentiles also were invited to be saved, Isaiah 45:22. Nation after nation has been called; but few, few have yet showed that they were real Christians, the elect of God…Read the comment
