Context of Mark 12:7
5He sent another, and that one they killed. This happened to many others, some of whom were beaten, others killed. 6He had one left, his one dear son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and the inheritance will be ours!’ 8So they seized him, killed him, and threw his body out of the vineyard. 9What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7The reasoning of the tenants is unclear to us, although it was apparently clear to the original hearers, requiring no further explanation (compare Matthew 21:38; Luke 20:14). Perhaps when the son arrived, the tenants thought the father had died. They may have believed that if they killed the son, no rightful owner would remain. Then the vineyard might become theirs, since they had worked it for many years.Read the comment
