Context of John 1:40
38Jesus turned around and saw them following and said to them, “What do you want?” So they said to him, “Rabbi” (which is translated Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39Jesus answered, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about four o’clock in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard what John said and followed Jesus. 41He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is translated Christ). 42Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 37-42Verses 37-42 The strongest and most prevailing argument with an awakened soul to follow Christ, is, that it is he only who takes away sin. Whatever communion there is between our souls and Christ, it is he who begins the discourse. He asked, What seek ye? The question Jesus put to them, we should all put to ourselves when we begin to follow Him, What do we design and desire? In following Christ, do we seek the favour of God and eternal life? He invites…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 40-42Simon is well known in the Gospels, not for his courage and faith, but for his failings (see 18:15–18, 25–27). Jesus gave him the name Cephas, an Aramaic word that means “rock.” In Greek, this name is Petros. In English, we say Peter. This name pointed to the strong church leader Simon would later become (see Acts 1:1–5:42; 8:1–12:25; 15:1–41).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4040. One ... was Andrew--The other was doubtless our Evangelist himself. His great sensitiveness is touchingly shown in his representation of this first contact with the Lord; the circumstances are present to him in the minutest details; he still remembers the Very hour. But "he reports no particulars of those discourses of the Lord by which he was bound to Him for the whole of His life; he allows everything personal to retire" [Olshausen]. Peter's…Read the comment
