Context of John 1:23

21So they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not!” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No!” 22Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” John said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.” 24(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25So they asked John, “Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
