Context of Isaiah 62:8
6I post watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they should keep praying all day and all night. You who pray to the Lord, don’t be silent! 7Don’t allow him to rest until he reestablishes Jerusalem, until he makes Jerusalem the pride of the earth. The Lord swears an oath by his right hand, by his strong arm: “I will never again give your grain to your enemies as food, and foreigners will not drink your wine, which you worked hard to produce. 9But those who harvest the grain will eat it, and will praise the Lord. Those who pick the grapes will drink the wine in the courts of my holy sanctuary.” 10Come through! Come through the gates! Prepare the way for the people! Build it! Build the roadway! Remove the stones! Lift a signal flag for the nations!

Commentaries on Isaiah 62:8
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8The Lord hath sworn by his right hand - An oath was taken in various forms among the ancients. It was usually done by lifting up the hand toward beaten and appealing to God. As God could swear by no greater Hebrews 6:13, he is represented as swearing by himself (see the notes at Isaiah 45:23). Here he is represented as swearing by his right hand and by his arm - the strong instrument by which he would accomplish his purposes to defend and save his people…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-9Verses 6-9 God's professing people must be a praying people. He is not displeased with us for being earnest, as men commonly are; he bids us to cry after him, and give him no rest, Luke 11:5,6. It is a sign that God is coming to a people in mercy, when he pours out a spirit of prayer upon them. See how uncertain our creature-comforts are. See also God's mercy in giving plenty, and peace to enjoy it. Let us delight in attending the courts of the Lord, that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8The Lord swore an oath just as he did when he had sworn an oath: to Noah (Genesis 8:20–9:17), to Abraham (Genesis 22:16; see also Luke 1:73; Hebrews 6:13), and to David (Psalm 89:3). Never again will I give: To punish and cleanse a small group of his people, God allowed the Assyrians and Babylonians to destroy them (see Isaiah 6:12–13). He promised not to do this again.Read the comment
