Context of Isaiah 62:8
6I have put guards on your walls, Jerusalem. They should never be quiet, during the day and during the night. You people who cause the Lord to remember his promises, never stop and rest! 7Do not give the Lord a chance to rest, until he has made Jerusalem strong again. Continue to pray until he makes it a famous city that the whole world will praise. The Lord makes a strong promise, and he has the power to make it happen. He says: ‘I will never again take away your grain, and give it to your enemies for food. Foreign soldiers will not drink your wine that you have worked very hard to make. 9Instead, the people who pick the grain at harvest time are the people who will eat it. And they will praise the Lord for it. The people who pick the grapes will drink the wine. They will drink it in the yards of my temple.’ 10Pass through the gates! Pass through the gates! Prepare the way for the people to travel on. Build up the road! Make it strong! Remove the stones! Lift up a flag, so that the nations can see the way to go.

Commentaries on Isaiah 62:8
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8The Lord hath sworn by his right hand - An oath was taken in various forms among the ancients. It was usually done by lifting up the hand toward beaten and appealing to God. As God could swear by no greater Hebrews 6:13, he is represented as swearing by himself (see the notes at Isaiah 45:23). Here he is represented as swearing by his right hand and by his arm - the strong instrument by which he would accomplish his purposes to defend and save his people…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-9Verses 6-9 God's professing people must be a praying people. He is not displeased with us for being earnest, as men commonly are; he bids us to cry after him, and give him no rest, Luke 11:5,6. It is a sign that God is coming to a people in mercy, when he pours out a spirit of prayer upon them. See how uncertain our creature-comforts are. See also God's mercy in giving plenty, and peace to enjoy it. Let us delight in attending the courts of the Lord, that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8The Lord swore an oath just as he did when he had sworn an oath: to Noah (Genesis 8:20–9:17), to Abraham (Genesis 22:16; see also Luke 1:73; Hebrews 6:13), and to David (Psalm 89:3). Never again will I give: To punish and cleanse a small group of his people, God allowed the Assyrians and Babylonians to destroy them (see Isaiah 6:12–13). He promised not to do this again.Read the comment
