Context of Isaiah 62:8
6I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem. They will never be silent day or night. Whoever calls on the Lord, do not give yourselves any rest, 7and do not give him any rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it an object of praise throughout the earth. The Lord has sworn with his right hand and with his mighty arm, “I will never again let your enemies eat your grain, nor will foreigners drink the new wine which you made.” 9Those who harvest grain will eat it and praise the Lord. Those who gather grapes will drink wine in my holy courtyards. 10Go through! Go through the gates! Prepare a way for the people! Build up! Build up the highway! Clear away the stones! Raise a flag for the people!

Commentaries on Isaiah 62:8
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8The Lord hath sworn by his right hand - An oath was taken in various forms among the ancients. It was usually done by lifting up the hand toward beaten and appealing to God. As God could swear by no greater Hebrews 6:13, he is represented as swearing by himself (see the notes at Isaiah 45:23). Here he is represented as swearing by his right hand and by his arm - the strong instrument by which he would accomplish his purposes to defend and save his people…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-9Verses 6-9 God's professing people must be a praying people. He is not displeased with us for being earnest, as men commonly are; he bids us to cry after him, and give him no rest, Luke 11:5,6. It is a sign that God is coming to a people in mercy, when he pours out a spirit of prayer upon them. See how uncertain our creature-comforts are. See also God's mercy in giving plenty, and peace to enjoy it. Let us delight in attending the courts of the Lord, that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8The Lord swore an oath just as he did when he had sworn an oath: to Noah (Genesis 8:20–9:17), to Abraham (Genesis 22:16; see also Luke 1:73; Hebrews 6:13), and to David (Psalm 89:3). Never again will I give: To punish and cleanse a small group of his people, God allowed the Assyrians and Babylonians to destroy them (see Isaiah 6:12–13). He promised not to do this again.Read the comment
