Context of Isaiah 62:8
6On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed and stationed watchmen (prophets), Who will never keep silent day or night; You who profess the Lord, take no rest for yourselves, 7And give Him no rest [from your prayers] until He establishes Jerusalem And makes her a praise on the earth. The Lord has sworn [an oath] by His right hand and by His mighty arm, “I will never again give your grain as food for your enemies, Nor will [the invading] foreigners drink your new wine for which you have labored.” 9But they who have harvested it will eat it and praise the Lord, And they who have gathered it will drink it [at the feasts celebrated] in the courtyards of My sanctuary. 10Go through, go through the gates, Clear the way for the people; Build up, build up the highway, Remove the stones, lift up a banner over the peoples.

Commentaries on Isaiah 62:8
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8The Lord hath sworn by his right hand - An oath was taken in various forms among the ancients. It was usually done by lifting up the hand toward beaten and appealing to God. As God could swear by no greater Hebrews 6:13, he is represented as swearing by himself (see the notes at Isaiah 45:23). Here he is represented as swearing by his right hand and by his arm - the strong instrument by which he would accomplish his purposes to defend and save his people…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-9Verses 6-9 God's professing people must be a praying people. He is not displeased with us for being earnest, as men commonly are; he bids us to cry after him, and give him no rest, Luke 11:5,6. It is a sign that God is coming to a people in mercy, when he pours out a spirit of prayer upon them. See how uncertain our creature-comforts are. See also God's mercy in giving plenty, and peace to enjoy it. Let us delight in attending the courts of the Lord, that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8The Lord swore an oath just as he did when he had sworn an oath: to Noah (Genesis 8:20–9:17), to Abraham (Genesis 22:16; see also Luke 1:73; Hebrews 6:13), and to David (Psalm 89:3). Never again will I give: To punish and cleanse a small group of his people, God allowed the Assyrians and Babylonians to destroy them (see Isaiah 6:12–13). He promised not to do this again.Read the comment
