Context of Isaiah 62:8
6On your walls, Jerusalem, I have set watchmen. All day and all night, they will never hold their peace. “You who remind Adonai, take no rest for yourselves, 7And give Him no rest until He establishes and makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth. Adonai has sworn by His right hand and by His strong arm: “Surely I will never again give your grain as food for your enemies, nor will foreigners drink your new wine, for which you have labored. 9But those who have garnered it will eat it and praise Adonai, and those who have gathered it will drink it in the courts of My Sanctuary.” 10Go through, go through the gates. Clear the way for the people! Build up, build up the highway! Remove the stones. Lift up a banner over the peoples.

Commentaries on Isaiah 62:8
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8The Lord hath sworn by his right hand - An oath was taken in various forms among the ancients. It was usually done by lifting up the hand toward beaten and appealing to God. As God could swear by no greater Hebrews 6:13, he is represented as swearing by himself (see the notes at Isaiah 45:23). Here he is represented as swearing by his right hand and by his arm - the strong instrument by which he would accomplish his purposes to defend and save his people…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-9Verses 6-9 God's professing people must be a praying people. He is not displeased with us for being earnest, as men commonly are; he bids us to cry after him, and give him no rest, Luke 11:5,6. It is a sign that God is coming to a people in mercy, when he pours out a spirit of prayer upon them. See how uncertain our creature-comforts are. See also God's mercy in giving plenty, and peace to enjoy it. Let us delight in attending the courts of the Lord, that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8The Lord swore an oath just as he did when he had sworn an oath: to Noah (Genesis 8:20–9:17), to Abraham (Genesis 22:16; see also Luke 1:73; Hebrews 6:13), and to David (Psalm 89:3). Never again will I give: To punish and cleanse a small group of his people, God allowed the Assyrians and Babylonians to destroy them (see Isaiah 6:12–13). He promised not to do this again.Read the comment
