Context of Acts 7:19
17“But as the time drew near for God to fulfill the promise he had declared to Abraham, the people increased greatly in number in Egypt, 18until another king who did not know about Joseph ruled over Egypt. This was the one who exploited our people and was cruel to our ancestors, forcing them to abandon their infants so they would die. 20At that time Moses was born, and he was beautiful to God. For three months he was brought up in his father’s house, 21and when he had been abandoned, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.

Commentaries on Acts 7:19
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19The same dealt subtilty - ̔ , A word borrowed from the Septuagint, who thus translate the Hebrew לו נהחכמה nithchokmah lo, let us deal wisely with it, i.e. with cunning and deceit, as the Greek word implies; and which is evidently intended by the Hebrew. See Genesis 27:35, Thy brother came with subtilty, which the Targumist explains by בחוכמא be -chokma, with wisdom, that is, cunning and deceit. For this the Egyptians were so remarkable that , to…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19Dealt subtilly - He acted deceitfully; he used fraud. The cunning or deceitful attempt which is referred to, is his endeavour to weaken and destroy the Jewish people by causing their male children to be put to death, Exodus 1:22. Our kindred - Our nation, or our ancestors. And evil-entreated - Was unjust and cruel toward them. So that - For that purpose, or to “cause” them to cast them out. He dealt with them in this cruel manner, hoping that the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-29Verses 17-29 Let us not be discouraged at the slowness of the fulfilling of God's promises. Suffering times often are growing times with the church. God is preparing for his people's deliverance, when their day is darkest, and their distress deepest. Moses was exceeding fair, "fair toward God;" it is the beauty of holiness which is in God's sight of great price. He was wonderfully preserved in his infancy; for God will take special care of those of whom…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-53Stephen answered the accusations by speaking about his Lord (see Luke 21:12–17). Instead of defending himself, he became a witness in God's legal case against them. This revealed how contrary they were and their lack of loyalty. Stephen gave a history of Israel's past and reminded them of their repeated rejections of those who announced God's messages. Stephen's review of Israel's history has three main parts: The work of the patriarchs. This refers to…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-60In this long defense Stephen takes a much wider range, and goes less directly into the point raised by his accusers, than we should have expected. His object seems to have been to show (1) that so far from disparaging, he deeply reverenced, and was intimately conversant with, the whole history of the ancient economy; and (2) that in resisting the erection of the Gospel kingdom they were but treading in their fathers' footsteps, the whole history of their…Read the comment
